What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced “Ray Key”) is a non-invasive, non-manipulative Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. Reiki promotes natural healing in the body. It addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual discomfort. Reiki facilitates a feeling of well being, often lasting for several days. It is also referred to as a form of energy medicine.

What is energy medicine?
Energy medicine is based on the idea that “dis-ease” can create disease in the body. Imbalances in the body often occur from unresolved emotional issues and traumas. If they are not dealt with, these imbalances can create disease. Energy medicine involves breaking up energy blockages in the body to promote natural healing within the body. Energy blockages can also occur from improper breathing.

How does Reiki work?
Reiki heals by flowing through energetic blocks in the body. It calms the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system or the “fight or flight” sensation in the body. Reiki allows for the parasympathetic or the “rest and digest” portion of the autonomic nervous system to ignite. When your body shifts into this calming and peaceful phase, you relax and healing occurs naturally.

How do I prepare for a Reiki session?
It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing. You may want to remove belts, watches or jewelry. Loosen or remove ties. You will remain clothed but will remove your shoes. Remember to turn off your cell phone and any alarms you may have set, which can be disruptive during your time of relaxation. You may also want to set an intention prior to the start of your Reiki session because energy goes where the mind tells it to go.
-
What should I expect in a Reiki session?
The client generally lies down for a treatment, however it can be administered from a chair. The practitioner will hover their hands over various locations of your body. Sessions typically last for an hour, however half-hour sessions are also effective. It is not uncommon to sense physical changes throughout the treatment. You may sense trembling, numbness, palpitations, light-headedness, dry mouth, heat, cold, stomach gurgling, see colors with closed eyes and experience heightened emotions or old memories. You may not physically sense anything at all, and yet the Reiki is still working. Everyone is made up of different energy. Your energy is like your fingerprint; it is unique to you. There is no right or wrong way to experience a Reiki treatment. You could fall asleep and still reap the benefits of your Reiki treatment. Simply set the intention to allow the healing energy to embrace you.
-
Is Reiki safe?
Yes. Reiki works in conjunction with all other forms of medical and therapeutic techniques to relieve negative side effects, promote recovery, shorten healing time, and reduce or eliminate pain. Reiki stimulates your own body’s ability to heal itself without disrupting medical treatments or medications prescribed by your health care providers. Reiki energy will enhance how your body feels by balancing it.
-
Are there any side affects from Reiki?
Yes. The most common side effects are positive ones, as your body is returned to a state of balance. You may find you sleep better, are less stressed, in less pain, heal quicker, and have a heightened sense of well being. Occasionally, some people experience what is referred to as a “clearing” or a “healing crisis.” This is the body’s way of removing toxins or energies it no longer needs. Some may temporarily experience a slight headache or mild upset stomach for a short period of time. It is recommended that you drink water to help flush out any toxins. Once the body has been cleared there is a sense of calm, clear thinking and harmony.

What do I need to do during my Reiki treatment?

How often should I have Reiki?
Three treatments close together is the most effective option when working with acute issues such as pre or post operative visits. For general relaxation and stress reduction it’s best to go as often as you feel you need it. Listen to your intuition and remember Reiki creates balance in the body and will never cause harm.
