I recently experienced my first Gong Meditation. I had no idea what to expect. I wondered if I would even like it. A friend recommended I try it and I’m delighted that I did.

The gongs are quite large and each one emits its own sound. Each sound seemed to evoke a different emotion and visual image for me. Judy Strauss, who owns the gongs, has a number of them. She also incorporates singing bowls, chimes, rainsticks and other lovely sounding instruments that she utilizes throughout the meditation. She was a one-woman orchestra of beautiful sounds.

What do you do for a gong meditation?  The answer is simple…you lie down comfortably on a yoga mat with pillows and a blanket. You close your eyes and listen. It’s that simple. However, the experience was very powerful.

Everyone I spoke to after the gong meditation had their own personal experience, but profound for all. For me I saw many beautiful images in my mind’s eye. It was almost like dreaming, but being awake. I felt energized by the sound. My body was tingling as the sounds escalated from the gongs. At one point she had three gongs  going at once and it was so intense. It was loud, but did not hurt my ears at all. I wondered if it could get any louder, and it did. I could feel the vibrations bouncing off the floors and the walls. I found it exhilarating.

A close friend went to the meditation with a sprained ankle and said that it was aching the entire time. However, when she awoke the next morning she noticed that the pain in her ankle had disappeared completely. Judy mentioned that spontaneous healing can sometimes occur.

I  encourage you to try one of these meditations. I found the experience deeply calming, and my friend had a healing occur. If nothing else, I can guarantee that it will be one of the most unusual experiences you’ll ever have.

  1. Teresa, I am so happy that you enjoyed the gong meditation and wrote about it on you beautiful site! I look forward to playing these amazing instruments for you again soon. Sometimes I put Reiki into the gongs before I play – maybe you’d like to join me in this energy work sometime. (((gong love))) / Judy

    • Hi Judy,

Your gong meditations are amazing. I would love to collaborate with you doing energy work. I would happily help to Reiki the gongs, the space or whatever you needed. I’m looking forward to the February 11th session at Yoga Loka. Thanks for the feedback. Have a wonderful day.
